Filtration

Why is a Hang On Back Filter Important

A hang on back filter is a pump that hangs on the back of the aquarium. It pulls water from the aquarium using a tube.

As the water flows through the filter, it gets filtered using various types of filtration. Mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration are used. Each one eliminates toxins and debris in different ways.

Once the water completely cycles through, it is returned to the aquarium in a much cleaner and healthier state.

Types of Filtration

  • Mechanical filtration is process of removing solid particles from water by circulating water and straining it through various kinds of aquarium filters.
  • Chemical filtration is a process by which chemical additives remove dissolved wastes from the water. The most common method for chemical filtration uses activated charcoal.
  • Biological filtration refers to the process where beneficial bacteria propagate and break down toxic waste in the aquarium.
